Redskins sign FS Tanard Jackson, close to a deal with LB London Fletcher

It looks like by the end of the weekend, the Redskins will have made two signings to bolster their current defensive personnel, as it stands now.

Earlier today, the Redskins signed Tanard Jackson, formerly of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Jackson was released by Tampa Bay early this week, and many speculated that Washington would be a potential landing spot because of his connection with new secondary coach Raheem Morris, who coached Jackson when he was a defensive back’s coach and head coach with the Buccaneers, and because he is a native of Silver Spring, MD.

Jackson has 10 career interceptions, with two coming in 2010 after a season where he reached picked off a career-best five (in 2009). He’ll be competing for both a starting spot at Free Safety, as well as a roster spot in general, with the recently acquired Madieu Williams and Reed Doughty.

Also, there are several reports from anonymous sources with “knowledge of the negotiations” (also confirmed by NFL Network), that the Redskins are close to completing a deal with linebacker London Fletcher. It’s believed that a deal completed by either the end of the weekend, or sometime Monday at the latest.

Fletcher remains a free agent, and while he hasn’t appeared to draw a lot of interest from other teams, his free agent status has been a source of angst from many Redskins fans. He is easily the most respected player on the Redskins roster (at least through last season), and many would argue the best player as well.

For all intents and purposes, at least until a certain quarterback from Baylor is drafted by the Burgundy and Gold in less than two weeks, Fletcher could be considered the face of this franchise.

FLETCH tweets that the deal is done. Hooray!

Don’t expect enough cap room left to sign FOX or HIGHTOWER.
