Redskins among the teams reaching out to representatives of Peyton Manning

According to, the Washington Redskins have made an initial inquiry with representatives of Peyton Manning, likely regarding his potential interest in signing with the team:

“The Miami Dolphins and Washington Redskins also reached out to Manning’s camp, league sources told [Adam] Schefter.”

The Manning-to-the-Redskins talk seemed to have died down a bit in the time leading up to and during the NFL combine, especially as rumors of a potential trade with the St. Louis Rams, for the #2 overall pick in the 2012 draft, began to emerge.

However, with Manning’s release, rumors connecting Manning to the Redskins have quickly re-emerged. ESPN’s Adam Schefter called the Redskins an early favorite to be among the “final four” teams that Manning will likely choose between, in terms of where he wants to play next year. He also listed the Miami Dolphins (the presumed early favorite early on), the New York Jets, and the Arizona Cardinals as the other members of this “final four,” and the Kansas City Chiefs & Seattle Seahawks as two other darkhorse teams.

It’s believed that Dolphins owner Stephen Ross highly covets Manning, and will push hard for the team to sign him.

In my personal opinion, I believe Peyton Manning signing Miami makes the most sense for Miami (although I think Peyton signing with the Jets makes the most sense for him). Miami could then sign Reggie Wayne, who I think would happily sign there, to join Manning and come back to Miami (remember that he went to “The U”). As Manning mentioned yesterday, he and Wayne have already been working out together so far, and it’s not coincidental that Wayne had the worst statistical output in eight years in 2011, after Manning missed the entire season.

If Miami signed Manning and Wayne, that offense would feature Manning under center, Brandon Marshall & Wayne as the #1 & #2 receivers, Davone Bess as the #3/slot receiver (where he’d be a great fit), Anthony Fasano (a very solid & underrated player) at tight end, and Reggie Bush as the run/catch threat out of the backfield. The Dolphins also have a franchise left tackle in Jake Long, a promising young center in Maurkice Pouncey, and a respectable rest of the line as well.

No, no, a thousand times no. The 15 mill more or less will severely limit out signings in other areas like ILB, SS, CB, R-OT, and WR.

All reports are saying you got your wish, 007. Now it’s time to over compensate for RG3. I hope the Skins have the free agents lined up or they are in big trouble.

Remains to be see in the FA market. I can’t see us reaching for GRIFFIN without the horses to go with. IF………a big IF, we settle on a top WR like COLSTON or GARCON, ILB like TULLOCH, R-OT like JARED GAITHER, CB like WILLIAM GAY, and SS like…..well, like…….LaRON LANDRY.

Signing TULLOCK and releasing FLETCH would probably net another quarter to half a mill for FA, more if LONDON wants a raise.

Giving up a 1, late 4, and 6 this year, and a 1, and 3 next might land GRIFFIN in D.C.

So we could pick MARK BARRON SS in the early second and not worry about LaRON. We’d also pick up considerable cap room. If LANDRY re-signs then take MIKE ADAMS OT.

That leaves TRUMAIN JOHNSON at CB/FS in the third.

CB JAMELL JOHNSON in the fourth.

NT NICK JEAN-BAPTISTE in the fifth, or fourth if a team takes LICHTENSTEIGER & our fifth, allowing us to move up.

DE ETHAN JOHNSON in the seventh.
