Redskins could pursue top Wide Receiver options in Free Agency

Courtesy of Mark Maske — one of the best in the business — of the Washington Post:

The Washington Redskins are making plans to add a high-profile wide receiver in an NFL free agent market that has them in abundance, according to several people familiar with the team’s deliberations.

Maske tops the list of potential targets for the Redskins with Vincent Jackson of San Diego and Pierre Garcon of Indianapolis.

Jackson is coming off is third 1,0000 yard receiving season in four years, and his second season with nine receiving touchdowns in three years. But there are three key factors working against the Redskins potentially signing him: his age (he just turned 29), his price tag (he could draw some very lucrative offers from other teams in Free Agency), and the fact that he’s clashed with management in San Diego, which goes against the profile of players the Redskins are looking to target when rebuilding their team.

Garcon is an interesting target. He’ll be 26 when the season starts, and is coming off a season high 947 yards receiving in 2011, even despite playing with a chaotic quarterback situation in Indianapolis. He’s more of the “more value-priced” up-and-coming type of player that fits the Redskins mold. However, there remains the strong possibility of him following Peyton Manning and Reggie Wayne, to whichever team potentially signs either/both next.

Maske alludes to one more free agent target, whom I’ve heard connected to the Redskins by various sources as well: Marques Colston of New Orleans. Colston is a free agent, whom the Saints not be able to resign, especially if they end up having to devote a large portion of available cap room by placing the franchise tag on Drew Brees (who is currently a free agent). He’s coming off a season where he, very quietly, had 80 receptions for 1,143 yards, his highest totals since the 2007 season.

Colston will turn 29 this summer, so he’s also not the youngest guy available, but he is a hard-working, productive player that the Redskins could potentially use. He’d also be a great influence on guys like Leonard Hankerson and Niles Paul, as Colston has a similar build and playing style.
