Could the Redskins make a move for the #2 pick in the next few days?

Reporting from the 2012 NFL Scouting Combine, ESPN’s John Clayton dropped an interesting bit of conjecture regarding the potential trade scenarios for the #2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, currently owned by St. Louis.

Clayton discussed how the Rams are actively discussing trading the pick (Adam Schefter of ESPN has reported that “multiple” teams have had preliminary discussions with the Rams regarding this pick), and had this to say about the Redskins involvement in a trade:

The Redskins draft sixth, and because they aren’t interested in unsigned Green Bay backup quarterback Matt Flynn, what would make sense is working on a trade to get something done as early as this week. If the Redskins made the right offers this week — and we have had draft-choice trades made before the trade deadline and at the combine — the Redskins could get to No. 2.

The context of said trade, of course, is regarding a team moving up in the draft to get a chance to select Robert Griffin III from Baylor University.

While it’s great fodder for discussion, I personally don’t think there’s any realistic chance of this happening.

St. Louis’ best option would be to let a couple of teams fall in love with Griffin, and hold out for the very best offer. Some team will get antsy and make a huge trade offer, as they get desperate to both outbid any competitors and secure Griffin for themselves.

It’d be way too early for St. Louis to start thinking about trading the pick now, when they can hold out for as long as they want, and possibly even threaten teams that they’ll keep the pick if they don’t like any offers (the Rams could legitimately take guys like OT Matt Kalil of USC or WR Justin Blackmon from Oklahoma State).

Of course, if the Redskins make an aggressive offer now — something like a 1st, 2nd, and 4th round pick this year, plus next year’s 1st round pick — it might be too good for the Rams to pass up.

But I wouldn’t hold my breath over this.

Just say ‘no’ to reaching for RG3. Stick with the plan. If possible, move down not up and get picks. TANNEHILL or WEEDEN. Then sell out next year for MATT BARKLEY, and trade this season’s QB get for 2013 picks.

Redskins have 8 Picks this year swap 1st trade second and fourth and maybe a second next year theres your franchise qb right there

Yeah, I’m not into trading up for that much of a price. But trading down like last year to end up with potentially Cody Glenn and Tannehill or Weeden in the second plus another second on a LB or CB sounds a whole lot better
