Refresh: Joey Porter In Town Today

Former Miami LB Joey Porter is meeting with HC Mike Shanahan, DC Jim Haslett, and LB coach Lou Spanos today. Apparently the Redskins own London Fletcher likes the idea of Porter joining his unit.

Via The Post:

“Coach Haslett and Lou Spanos, they know him very well. I don’t have to sell him on the scheme or on them or anything like that. It’s just a matter of a feel, how they feel he can fit in our defense with the Washington Redskins. He’s a play-making linebacker — outside linebacker… He had nine sacks last year? That’s a lot of sacks for an outside linebacker. He didn’t even play a whole lot toward the end of the year. So that’s still a lot of pressure on the quarterback.”

London Fletcher

Yes, Porter did have a decent amount of sacks last year, tied for 6th most out of all 3-4 OLB’s. However he logged the fewest tackles – solo or assisted – of any year in his career since he became a starter. And, he did miss several snaps during his last 3 games… but he also missed snaps throughout the year. Arguably his best game came against Carolina on the road — he only played 73% of the game. Against San Diego on the road, he only played 26 snaps and did well enough to get 1 sack, 1 tackle, and 2 run stops.

Meanwhile – his worst games came when he played 80% or more of the time.  When Porter played Houston at home, he played 93% of the time and yet it was one of his worst games… no sacks, no QB hits or pressures, 2 tackles, 1 run stop.

Whats the point?

Porter seems to be a much better contributor in a limited role — so a word to the Redskins coaching staff if you plan on signing him. Perhaps using only him in a 3rd down situation or a limited and unique pressure package where the QB absolutely must be pressured, hit, or sacked — would be best for Porter and for the team.

Just sayin.
