Brain’s Song, Gale Sayers, and 6 TDs!

Can we get AP back for a day with WFT as the early morning news has slightly changed the season for every RB and WR and TE or even QB in the NFL. The GOAT, or at least, a RB on Mt. Rushmore, Gale Sayers passed away in his sleep overnight.  So, what to watch for this Sunday and the rest of the season?  If a RB or any player  will break Sayers record of 6 touchdowns (rushing, receiving and returns) in a NFL game in honor of Gale’s lifetime achievements on and off the field, my guess is no!  That record is for the books is my prediction.

My mom tells me the day of my birth in 1973, or early that evening, ABC or one of those tv stations was replaying the movie, ‘Brian’s Song (1971).’   The movie based off the book co-authored by Gale Sayer and Al Silverman, “I Am Third.”  The book was about Sayers brotherhood with outstanding fullback Brian Piccolo, who untimely passed from cancer in the prime of his career.  Stuck down in his prime, Sayers retired soon thereafter in a sense.

Never actually saw the movie, read parts of the book as a kid but this knowledge of my birth night had this writer a Gale Sayers junky at an early age.  Knew that the movie and book are one of the saddest story ever in the sports world, it was a beautifully written tribute and had me hooked on Sayers and Brown as the GOAT.  RIP Bobby Mitchell, too!

Sayers, in most all those top 10 running backs books for kids and greatest players, a legend for 1970-1980s NFL fans.  When one looks at most every Sayers highlight, one can see a man amongst boys.

Oh, as for the rest of the season, let us see if any of the WFT player has a 6 TDs performance in them.  Coach them up, Rivera!  Yet, at the same time, this writer will be paying particular attention to AP (DET Roster) the rest of the season.  While happy to see WFT give AP his walking papers and go another direction from a vet with a lot of mileage on him (new decade)…this writer wonders aloud if AP, the RB of the decade (2010) has one more record to catch before his retirement.  Just wondering which one he can catch, Sayer’s–probably not!

Will anyone hit or exceed 6 TDs this season, something to watch for in tribute to the GOAT, Gale Sayers. RIP, Brian and Gale, reunited!
