‘The Washington Trees?’

By Marc Lande

Huh? You say, confused. This writer will get to ‘The Washington Trees?’

It looks like events are in motion where the Redskins name is discarded. This writer wakes every morning hoping to tune on the morning joe hearing Daniel Snyder has done the right thing. The time is now. In the immortal words of Midnight Oil, “The time has come.”

But I know this could possibly be a decade long fight. It has me sickened to think the lease of FedEx is not due up until 2027. But now, oh–How I hope in the morning to hear Snyder announces the racist name change. Wow! But now we are building in, digging in, which might be a long road for justice.

So, I am here to argue when the name is changed please Dan keep the name of the team: indigenous! This is a call to every media outlet in town to take this stance along with me. To me, the name change is not just enough.

As in previous articles this writer talks about how he wants a Native American Centric Experience at FedEx—starting ASAP! How it starts with the name!

Yes, one key is you, Snyder to discard this racist name. But this writer is fighting through the press as heavily to what kind of name change as changing the name itself. That this whole re-naming process is done by Oneida or another Tribal council, it is one of many ways to repay!

Who really cares if we are called the football team the Washington Senators? Presidents? Protectors? Guardians? Hogs?

I plead that as we move forward in our push to end this unjust name that we also push for an indigenous tribal name or a name that the Native Americans themselves nickname and give to us. Think France and Statue of Liberty. Think Pocahontas and John Smith!

Heck, anyone knows a word for tree in Iroquois! ‘The Washington Trees’ a la Native American language.

Directions are important in Native Americans tribes, how about the Washington North a la Native American language. Lincoln did reside in this town! That would be just.

My dad, a fifty plus season ticket holder, says, “First Americans.” How about that in Iroquois!

Also, why not a name that is hard to pronounce for English speaking Americans! Why do we have to be so ethnocentric, we do not! Some kids are learning Mayan songs and all sorts of new knowledges. The world is getting smaller and smaller with each day. Let us expand our knowledge!

Heck have a problem with the names from India and such, why not a word which we butcher for a while. Until we learn it. Hmmm, that process sounds, well, just more just than the way we got to Redskins. Well?

Learning from the Natives, hmmm, reminds me a holiday, Dan. Happy thanksgiving?

Second, the helmet/ logo got to go with the name. I love this helmet. Read previous article on my views if a reader is confused with this writer.

Once again, Dan bring the logo to the Oneida or something like that to design. The new helmet could be a strike out with the general public like a lot of uniforms in town—the teal Wizards uniform, the black Capitals uniform.

I do not see how with the name we are also not getting rid of helmet–but I understand that half the crowd loves the logo. So, it is a big big deal. I know Washington loves controversies. But get this one on the right side of history at least—whether it is rejected by football fans is another story.

This writer is sitting behind a wall with a beautiful Native American portrait ‘in full pow wow regal’ for this century.

Heck, for all I know, I would design the new helmet right off the Pow Wow ceremony and its dancer. Pow wow flash dance! Ok, flash dance is on the radio.

But, I want this team to raise heck on the field. We can have a new uniform that screams—Starbuck in Battlestar—or rather, peacemaker that will play like men amongst boys!

Here in DC, we are going against the star of Dallas—always, until this writer is told otherwise. Our new uniform can be like the best performing uniform—11 pow wows coming to take the rodeo!

Heck invest in some of that sports sciene to work with the Oneida to design a Lombardi outfit. Design the ultimate in sports logos, Dan but most importantly make it indigenous.

I can think of nothing more powerful for this town on a football field. Once again, bring it to the Oneida or some sort of tribal council because this writer has no idea what they will want to give to us white men! Or, rather American sport fans!

Maybe they want our helmet to be a Native American in glasses and professional attire. Let them guide their image to us. Did not we give them the images of them for a just a few seasons, now?

This writer would say, in the morning say your morning prayer that Snyder is listening. But also say a prayer that Snyder keeps this team indigenous people. That, an indigenous statement is a statement for the Nation’s team. For America’s team!
