Will Daniel Snyder Be the Final Decision Maker on Who Plays QB for the Redskins?

The Redskins organization may have a disagreement on their hands as to who the starting quarterback will be for 2019 and owner Daniel Snyder may have the final say in the matter according to Dianna Russini of ESPN.

This is not the Redskins first disagreement on the team’s direction this offseason. Russini had previously reportedly that there was major disagreement on draft night as to who to select at No.15-overall, with the “football guys” wanting to select a defensive player while Snyder and team president Bruce Allen wanted quarterback Dwayne Haskins of Ohio State. Snyder and Allen prevailed in that decision but the coaches ended up also getting what they wanted when Mississippi State defensive end Montez Sweat started falling down draft boards and the Redskins were able to trade back into the first round to grab him.

The same kind of divide is brewing about the starting QB. The Redskins have the quarterback battle to watch this offseason, a three-way battle between veterans Case Keenum, Colt McCoy and the rookie Haskins. Even if Haskins is more talented, Keenum has made 54 starts during his six seasons in the NFL and McCoy has been in Washington’s system for five years now. Russini expects the “football guys” and the front office to once again be in disagreement with who to start Week 1.

“If it was up to the football side β€” the coaches on this team, they want to roll with a guy who has been out there before,” said Russini. “You don’t want to throw a rookie out there to face the Philadelphia Eagles Week 1. But, going back to how this worked in the draft β€” the owner, the GM, the vice president of operations, they are going to have a say in this decision. This isn’t going to be a Jay Gruden decision, this is going to be an owner decision, and the owner in football β€” he always wins.”

“In the end, I think the owner will win this because Dan Snyder is going to play the guy he wants to play, and that’s going to be the rookie Dwayne Haskins.”

So would Snyder really undermine his coaches like that? He certainly has before but this is a decision the team has got to get right-they cannot have any more turnover at the position after last year’s devastating injury to Alex Smith and they cannot afford to damage Haskins’ confidence if he is not really ready to take the reins. But Haskins has looked good during the offseason and has a legitimate shot to win the QB competition on merit. It is possible that, by August, both the owner and the “football guys” will be in agreement that Haskins is their quarterback of both the present and the future.

  1. Brian says:

Of course Danny boy will have his way, if history tells us anything…the dude is physically incapable of learning from past mistakes. This kid is going to start week one and will be done with his career just as fast as RGIII. Too bad, it seems as if Haskins has the right attitude to be patient and learn, Snyder is the reason this team is a laughing stock and it’s great history is forever tarnished.
