Redskins Wheel and Deal with Chiefs, Acquire QB Alex Smith Ending the Kirk Cousins Era

The Kirk Cousins era in Washington is over.

The Redskins on Tuesday night made a stunning move, dealing with the AFC West’s Kansas City Chiefs, acquiring quarterback Alex Smith from the Chiefs.

There’s no official word on what the Chiefs are going to get in return for Smith, though according to ESPN the Redskins would give Kansas City a third-round pick and Redskins cornerback Kendall Fuller as compensation.

Any trade involving Smith can’t be completed until the first day of the new league year, which begins at 3 p.m. on March 14th, but sources say it’s a done deal.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the deal to get Smith to D.C. will also involve a new contract, a whopping four-year deal worth $23.5 million per year with $71 million in guaranteed money.

The trade means that the team will not bring back Cousins as their quarterback, and the team will look for suitors to take the QB off their hands.

The Broncos, Browns and possibly even Jacksonville are three teams that will make calls for Cousins, who has stated in the past that he wanted to stay with the Redskins.

  1. fullup the d-back says:

OMG the middle of the d-backfield gutted just so DARTH VADER can move on from the KC disaster. I thought the prez of football ops better than this.

I see GRUDEN’s here. “We need a better offense. Let’s sacrifice some defense so we at least have a capable vet at QB.” And tie him to the club for years to come at 34. Demote this guy to QB coach.

Crying about getting BSCHERFF, JALLEN rather than some offensive glitter with 1st round picks.

O-Line and tight-d win championships Mr. GRUDEN. Just ask Coach JOE.

Man, this just sucks. I’m right with D-SWEAR on this.

  2. fullup the d-back says:

I would rather roll with CMcC than give up the heart of the d-backfield.

They better sign ZB at ILB now, or we’re screwed in the heart of the defense. ILB’s will not be able to cover for the loss of FULLER.

Man, talk about desperation. The front office screwed the pooch this time.

  3. fill more than necessary says:

Remains to be seen if GEORGE ALLEN understands the worth of KENDALL FULLER, and goes for a slot corner in FA. There will be a couple available unless taken off the market by their respective teams. KYLE FULLER, KENDALL’s brother, happens to be one that may become available.

Doesn’t make much sense to save on a QB then go right out and spend big to replace the hole created by this trade. Not doing so weakens the defensive secondary big time however.

This looks for all the world like a desperation move by the front office to cover up a botched QB signing years ago
