Redskins Safety Su’a Cravens Says He Was a Victim of Racial Profiling During a Recent Traffic Stop

Redskins safety Su’a Cravens took to Twitter Monday to accuse the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office of racial profiling during a recent traffic stop, Des Bieler of the Washington Post reports.

The second-year player, who has been inactive this season, posted videos in which he used profane language in blasting officers for singling him out, treating him roughly and falsely accusing him of smelling like marijuana, and he threatened to bring a lawsuit over the incident.

Cravens said he was followed to an Ashburn mall’s parking lot, pulled out of his car and “slammed” against it, placed in handcuffs and put in the back of a squad car for “supposedly doing 39 in a 35.” He added, “Not to mention he called for 4 more squad cars and cuffed and threatened my little brother for a grabbing his phone to record .?.?. And [you] wonder why we angry. Complete bulls—!”

In a statement provided to The Post, a spokesman for the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office said Cravens was issued a summons for traveling at 39 mph in a 25 mph zone and also cited for having an illegal tint on his car’s windows on Nov. 29. The traffic stop was initiated after Cravens was tracked traveling above the speed limit in a school zone near Farmwell Station Middle School in Ashburn.

“This traffic stop was not a case of racial profiling,” the statement said. “Additionally, the LCSO has not received any formal complaints regarding this matter and it would be inappropriate to comment further regarding any allegations and involving a pending court case.”

According to online records, Cravens’s hearing is scheduled for Jan. 26.

“I’m black, I’ve got tattoos on my neck and I’m out here in a nice car,” Cravens said in one of his videos, as he angrily explained why he thought the incident occurred. He said police searched his car for marijuana but found nothing, after having “passed up” a driver ahead of him who was clearly going faster.

“Why is that? We all know why,” Cravens said to the camera. Earlier in the video, he said, “I’ma sue the s— out of this man, racial profiling a– man. S— is ridiculous, in this day and age we’re still doing this s—.”

“Please excuse my language. I promise my parents raised an intelligent and respectful young man,” Cravens said on Twitter. “But this bulls— the reason why people dying and athletes taking knees! Stop ignoring it.”
