The Redskins and Dolphins get set for a week one showdown in D.C. on Sunday, two teams that are hoping to take the next step and reach the postseason in 2015.
Kirk Cousins begins the year as the Redskins starter, taking the spot of RGIII who missed preseason time with a concussion, and then amid rumors that the former first-round pick would be traded or released.
Ndamukong Suh will look to make his presence known in his first game as a member of the Dolphins, and will lead a Miami defensive line that will look to take advantage of a weak Redskins O-line. Right guard Brandon Scherff will be the player to try and contain Suh.
”I’m definitely happy about my life,” Suh said, ”but there’s more to accomplish.”
The Redskins (4-12) are 2-7 when Cousins starts compared to 14-22 overall with Griffin, but feel confident that Cousins is a better option for coach Jay Gruden, who may be on the hot seat if his team doesn’t get off to a good start.
The Dolphins were 8-8 last season, and are hoping to get even more from QB Ryan Tannehill. Last season he finished 14th in the NFL last year with a 92.8 passer rating, tied for 12th with 27 touchdown passes and posted a yards-per-attempt figure of 6.86 that was sixth-worst in the league.
He should be able to throw early and often against the Redskins, and if he struggles, it could be a sign of bad things to come overall for the Fins.
Tannehill was sacked an NFL-high 139 times over his first three seasons, but the protection for Miami should be better in 2015, with left tackle Branden Albert back after reconstructive knee surgery. Albert was limited to nine games last season with a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee.
The home team has captured the last seven meetings in this series. The Dolphins have dropped seven of their last eight road games against the NFC.
Miami is the better team, and with Lamar Miller, who gained a career-high 1,099 yards with eight touchdowns leading the way, the Dolphins should start the year 1-0.
Miami 27 Washington 17

Miami – Ryan Tannehill 175 yards 2 TD’s, Lamar Miller 110 yards 1 TD
