Redskins Talking to Former Saints LB Galette; Should They Ink Him?

Baltimore Ravens v New Orleans Saints

Junior Galette, the troubled linebacker formerly of the New Orleans Saints met today with the Redskins. He was dismissed from the team due to some issues off the field according to Saints Gab.

The Washington Post’s Mike Jones is on board with the deal should it get done, and says the team would be wise to take a chance on Galette, as he could add more punch to the Redskins defense.

Is this a good move, though?

From a football standpoint, absolutely. Yes, it’s a deviation from the build-through-the-draft approach. But the chance to add a pass rusher of Galette’s caliber (12 sacks in 2013, his first as a starter, and 10 last season) doesn’t come around often.

The Redskins have Trent Murphy and Preston Smith in the mix, but you can never have too many pass rushers. And neither has reached Galette’s level yet. Smith could benefit from a limited workload and the chance to learn from two veterans with Ryan Kerrigan and Galette’s skill sets. Murphy, while solid against the run, still has a ways to go as a pass rusher.

A tandem of Kerrigan and Galette would cause problems for quarterbacks and in turn help the secondary. As you know, for years, the defensive backs have struggled in part because of a lack of consistent pressure up front.

The financial situation also appears favorable for Washington. With the Saints still on the hook for the guaranteed portion of Galette’s contract, the Redskins will not have to cough up a lot of money to sign him.

And a short-term deal also would prove beneficial because it gives Galette incentive.

The Redskins have to be careful if they do bring in Galette, making sure he doesn’t become a cancer in the locker room and let these ‘issues’ that he had in New Orleans crop up again.

If he’s truly ready to rumble and has put those issues aside, it would be an interesting move for the Redskins to make.

And of course, GALETTE has become a Redskin.

Bad news for TRENT MURPHY, TREVARDO WILLIAMS, and JACKSON JEFFCOAT. Murph because his play has undoubtedly occasioned this move, and WILLIAMS – JJ because they have no hope of making the cut short of multiple injuries at OLB.

WILLIAMS and JEFFCOAT were both on the practice squad last season and may be eligible for the PS again. Not sure of their status in that regard.

On offense, looks like SPENCER LONG is wobbling as well, and BRANDON SCHERFF has taken over with MORGAN MOSES sliding into the RT slot ahead of TOM COMPTON. I can see ARIE KOUANDJIO making the squad with it being a toss-up between LONG and LeRIBEUS for the last guard slot. LeRIBEUS has experience [not always a good thing] and can play back-up center which I think ultimately gives him the slot over LONG.

JERRELL POWE may not be the back-up NT after all. Looks like the REDSKINS are going to have to draft one if they want a true NT back-up.

TREVARDO WILLIAMS or JACKSON JEFFCOAT will be on the practice squad provided they clear waivers.

WILLIE SMITH in as the fourth OT.

Next season’s number one pick R-OT to replace TOM COMPTON.

Pundits seem to think LONG is in, LeRIBEUS is out. That wouldn’t make me unhappy.

Lines may shake out like this barring injuries:

Just a guess at this point of course
