Gruden Says There’s Room for Both Matt Jones and Alfred Morris

Florida v Florida State

The Redskins drafted Florida running back Matt Jones in the third round. He’s a big, physical runner at 6-foot-2, 226 pounds.

Coach Jay Gruden said, “He’s a little bit different than what we’ve had around here.” That’s because he’s more physical, a style well-suited for the direction the running game is headed, John Keim of reports.

But the Redskins have also said current RB Alfred Morris fits in well with it, too. After all, they’re not abandoning the outside zone — and it’s not as if Morris is a finesse back.

“Alfred won’t be affected,” Gruden said. “Alfred’s still the running back here. He’s had three great seasons and that won’t change. But to add another guy that can come in here and pound the rock a little bit doesn’t hurt anything. It’ll help Alfred in that regard, taking some carries off him. For the most part Alfred will be getting the bulk of the carries and Matt will get some too, obviously.”

Jones will provide insurance, but the Redskins say he might be able to develop into a third-down back. He caught 19 passes in three seasons at Florida, with 11 coming last season.

“I love catching the ball,” Jones said. “I feel I’m an every-down back. I’m just a complete back all the way around.”

“He’s a good all-around player,” Gruden said.

The Redskins begin play September 13th at home against the Miami Dolphins.  Tickets start at $40 with an average price on the secondary market currently at $288. Lots of pundits giving a jaundiced eye toward the BRANDON SCHERFF pick when LEONARD WILLIAMS was still on the board.

i wonder what they would be saying now if AMARI COOPER was still on the board then rather than WILLIAMS. I’m betting they’d be saying, “Good pick. Better safe than sorry.”

I’m all in with McCLOUGHAN. He’s got the info I don’t. Maybe they evaluated WILLIAMS a great player without a solid position to play, I don’t know.

But I’ve been loudly protesting the lack of offensive and defensive line picks ever since the SHANAHAN-era began.

This should have been done before RGIII not long afterward. Cart before the horse type of thing.

Anyway for better or worse this draft was all about line play and teams. And goodness knows both are sorely needed on this team right now.

So who’s bigger – DARREL YOUNG or MATT JONES? Could this be the end of the YOUNG era?

    and YOUNG this season?

In 2016, another RB pick with JONES supplanting YOUNG if JONES proves to be who the ‘Skins think he is.

WOW! DANTE FOWLER Jr. with a torn ACL in the second hour of 11 on 11 drills.

What a shame. Hopefully, his return won’t be like JARVIS JENKINS’ was for the ‘Skins.

Come to terms will all the picks for 2015. Let’s go ‘Skins.

The two picks at receiver apparantly were for teams play, and MITCHEL as well. Hopefully we have decent teams this season, a real weakness the past several seasons.

Teams have suffered since my main man Lo-A went to ARIZONA.

Sorry to see XAVIER NIXON dropped. He, and TOM COMPTON were favorites of mine.

TAKOBY COFIELD might get onto the practice squad.

TOM COMPTON appears headed for back-up duty this season.

MORGAN MOSES should be a guard beside TRENTWILLIAMS I think. Not quite mobile enough to handle left tackle.

Of course, the money’s been put on LAUVEO, but if SHAWN performs to last year’s level, expect MOSES to get a shot at left guard. Can’t see draft pick ARIE KOUANDJIO replacing LAUVEO, and LAUVEO becoming a cap casualty this season.

ARIE K and LONG both starting is improbable in 2015 especially with the fourth rounder’s knee history. but he will push LeRIBEUS off the roster this year, barring injury of course.

JOSH LeRIEBUS will not get out of camp.

SPENCER LONG may supplant CHRIS CHESTER with the starting RG from last year kept as a security blanket until his contract year. I think he becomes a cap casualty in 2016.

Best guess for starting roster in 2015 on the offensive line.
