Congress To Send A Letter To Goodell About Redskins Name

Two members of Congress plan to send a strongly worded letter to the commissioner of the National Football League on Monday urging him to support changing the name of the Washington Redskins because it offends Native Americans and others, with one lawmaker saying she might reconsider the league’s tax-exempt status if it does not comply, Emmarie Huetteman of the New York Times reports.

Senator Maria Cantwell, Democrat of Washington State and chairwoman of the Indian Affairs Committee, said in an interview on Sunday that lawmakers would “definitely” examine the NFL’s tax-exempt status and other ways to pressure the league.

“You’re getting a tax break for educational purposes, but you’re still embracing a name that people see as a slur and encouraging it,” Ms. Cantwell said.

In a copy of the letter released on Sunday, Ms. Cantwell and Representative Tom Cole, Republican of Oklahoma and a member of the Native American Caucus, chided the N.F.L. commissioner, Roger Goodell, for his recent remark that the name of the team, based near Washington, D.C., “honored” Native Americans.

“The NFL can no longer ignore this and perpetuate the use of this name as anything but what it is: a racial slur,” they said.

Mr. Goodell has been careful to say he is attentive to the concerns of those who disapprove of the name. But at a news conference before the Super Bowl last week, he said polls showed support, including among Native Americans, for keeping it.

“Let me remind you, this is the name of a football team, a football team that has had that name for 80 years and has presented the name in a way that has honored Native Americans,” he said.

Sounds like blackmail to me! Just bacause she is in congress doesn’t mean she can bully someone into changing their team name! She isn’t the “supreme leader”!!!

CONGRESS deal with immigration reform, the debt ceiling, foreign affairs, and most of all….job creation. Even…..gasp, go after the financial thieves that have stolen our country’s future. You’re paid to protect the public’s interest as well as that of business, large and small. Quit posturing before a soft target, and do your d-mned jobs.

Typical congressional move. Use Force and bully tactics to cram political correct crap down the throat of the citizens who are suppose to be the people of the free world.

Washington DC is a special case. The city’s governing body is Congress! That’s where the “bully” role derives. Congress is the city’s bully, like it or not. It is what it is.
