Rookie Phillip Thomas, the Redskins 4th round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, will be placed on injured reserve after suffering a Lisfranc injury in his left foot.
Head coach Mike Shanahan told the assembled media today that Thomas’ timetable for his recovery is approximately four to five months, effectively ending his rookie season before it even began.
Thomas had not been practicing recently, but the Redskins did not believe the injury was a Lisfranc injury originally. They later obtained a second opinion on Thomas, which changed their original diagnosis.
Thomas was the second of the three defensive backs that the Redskins took in this year’s draft, along with second round pick David Amerson and sixth round pick Bacarri Rambo. Many believed that he could challenge for the starting strong safety position sometime during the 2013 season.
