The Washington Redskins entered Fedex Field, where they hadn’t won in the last 7 appearances . The Atlanta Falcons were undefeated leading up to the game and showed why. Washington’s defense faced the task of containing Matt Ryan and the best receiver combination in the league. All things considered the Redskins played bettered than expected.

After a defensive slugfest in the first quarter, Ryan Kerrigan reminiscent of his play last season vs. the New York Giants took an interception for a touchdown. The Redskins lead

7-0 and it stayed that way for most of the second quarter. The Redskins found success all day running the ball until late in the game when they really needed the yards. Washington’s offense thought of to be a strength, was not able to pick up a first down until the second half.

Atlanta’s defensive coordinator Mike Nolan varied the looks and clearly won the matchup between him and Kyle Shanahan (Redskins Offensive Coordinator). An interesting side note to watch will be if the Washington Redskins keep Billy Cundiff. Cundiff missed another field goal in the second quarter that would have gave Washington a 10-0 lead. This comes after Cundiff missed three field goals last week in Tampa. Washington has had trouble finding a reliable kicker and could have tryouts this week in Ashburn.

Atlanta put together a quick 74-yard drive that resulted in a Tony Gonzalez one-yard touchdown. The Redskins were able to contain Roddy White but were not able to stop Gonzalez and Julio Jones who combined for 217 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Maybe more importantly than the game, Robert Griffin while trying to scramble for a touchdown in the third quarter was injured on a helmet to helmet it. RG3 left with a mild concussion and the Redskins turned to Kirk Cousins to seal a Redskins victory.

Kirk Cousins after a three-and-out threw a strike to a wide-open Santana Moss for a touchdown. Matt Ryan showed mental toughness in the fourth quarter producing seventeen points and after two late Cousins interceptions the game was over.

The Washington Redskins have a better quarterback situation this year than last year but if RG3 is out for an extended amount of time the Redskins could be looking at another 6-10 season. Looking at the positive, the Washington Redskins defense has made progress the last two weeks on the defensive side and gave the Skins a chance to win.
