The Griffin Offense

“Here’s a guy, who’s coming out, who’s very talented. Mobile, strong arm, regarded as being very intelligent, football mind. Are you going to cater the offense around his talent and what he’s able to do, or are you going to bring the Houston offense with Matt Schaub over to him, and just have him embedded in it?” –Mr. Donavan McNabb

Dear Mr. McNabb:

Many of us, myself included, have wondered what the Redskins offense would look like come the regular season. After last Sunday? I believe I have an answer for you.

After putting 40 on the board against the Saints D, one thing is for sure: this is not the Matt Schaub offense. This is the Robert Griffin III offense.

Throughout the past two years, the Redskins fan base has questioned the Shanahan offensive system and the play calling of Kyle. However, the offense under Griffin’s even-keeled manner looked explosive and Kyle dialed up great play call after great play call.

The Shanahans’ ability to call plays best suited for Griffin was more than refereshing. On the first series, Shanahan put Griffin in the shotgun formation, and got the ball out of his hands quickly. Similar quickly-developing plays allowed Griffin to get in a rhythm early. From there, it was a beautiful mix of designed runs, roll-outs, and option reads that had the Saints guessing all day.

Incorporating pieces of the Baylor offense with the already proven Shanahan system was a sight for sore Redskin eyes. I am not saying to expect 40 points every week, but it was clear that Griffin is comfortable in this offense and it is tailored to his style of play.

So, Donovan, as much as you might not have believed so, this Redskins team is trotting out a new-and-improved offense. Hopefully it’s one that prevents the let downs of years past.

However, there is only one way to find out if this Redskins team is truly different than those of years past…take care of business against the St. Louis Rams.

I, for one, am excited to see where this Griffin kid leads the Burgundy and Gold. But rest assured, he’ll lead us to a place that the Shanahan’s help guide him to.
