WR Leonard Hankerson cleared to participate in offseason activities

The Redskins went out and spent good money at the wide receiver position in free agency this year, looking to upgrade their current group and provide a slew of weapons for rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III to throw to.

Free agent additions Pierre Garcon and Josh Morgan now join the group of Redskins receivers which includes Leonard Hankerson, the team’s 3rd round pick in the 2011 NFL draft out of the University of Miami, who suffered a hip injury during his rookie campaign and finished the season on injured reserve.

He hasn’t suited up for some of the organized team activities (OTA)’s so far, instead working with trainers on the sideline, likely as a precaution to not rush back and risk further injury. But, at least Hankerson himself believes he’ll be fully healed from said injury very soon, if not already. Per Dan Graziano of ESPN.com’s NFC East Blog:

[Hankerson] has said he’s fully healthy and cleared to participate in all offseason activities, and if he can stay healthy and develop a rapport with Griffin, he could be a big-time weapon for this offense in short order

Hankerson suffered the injury after a breakout performance in the Redskins 20-9 loss vs. the Miami Dolphins last year, recording eight catches for 106 yards.

If he’s really healthy and ready to go when the season begins, he could prove an interesting addition to the current group of Redskins receivers. Assuming they keep Santana Moss, the Redskins could line up Garcon in the “X” receiver position (the de facto #1 receiver), Hankerson as the “Z” (flanker) receiver, Morgan from the slot position (his size and quickness would prove to be a nightmare matchup), and Moss as the deep threat/4th receiver.

That type of talent on the field, with a quarterback who can throw the football anywhere, could really put pressure on a defense. If the accounts of Moss coming into great shape leads to any type of bounceback season from him, Griffin may very well have a formidable group of receivers to choose from in 2012.
