Redskins 2012 Schedule Officially Released

The 2012 NFL regular season schedule was announced this evening at 7:00pm EST, meaning that the 2012 schedule for the Washington Redskins was also revealed.

The Redskins will play six of their first nine games of the season on the road, including opening the season with road games against the New Orleans Saints and St. Louis Rams; this will be the third straight year the Redskins play the Rams in St. Louis, with every matchup taking place within the first four games of the season.

Redskins fans won’t get to see Robert Griffin III, presumably the player the Redskins are set to take in next Thursday’s NFL draft, at least until the third regular season game, when the Redskins play their home opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on September 23rd.

The other major highlight of the schedule has to include the renewal of one of the oldest traditions in the NFL: the Redskins squaring off against the hated Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving Day, in Dallas. The last time the two teams played each other on Thanksgiving Day was 2002, when Dallas defeated the Steve Spurrier-led Redskins by a score of 27-20.

Other schedule notes:

* The Redskins will play every team in the NFC South within the first nine games of the season. They play New Orleans in Week 1, at Tampa Bay in Week 4, at home against Atlanta in Week 5, and at home against Carolina in Week 9.

* They’ll also be playing against the previous two #1 overall picks from the last two drafts: Sam Bradford (now with the Rams after being taken #1 overall in 2010) and Cam Newton (now with the Panthers after being taken #1 overall in 2011)

* The Redskins also “rendezvous” with the AFC North this season, playing on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers (Week 8), at home against the Baltimore Ravens (Week 14), and on the road against the Cleveland Browns (Week 15), in addition to their home opener against Cincinnati in Week 3.

* The Redskins will have one appearance on Monday Night Football this year, when they host the New York Giants on Monday, December 3rd. That will mark the fourth straight season the Redskins have played an NFC East opponent on Monday Night Football. They’re 0-3 in those matchups, and haven’t won on Monday Night since beating the Philadelphia Eagles in 2007.

* Speaking of the Eagles: the Redskins will host Philadelphia just five days before their Thanksgiving Day matchup in Dallas.

* The Redskins will play their regular season finale at home against Dallas on Sunday, December 30th. One can only hope there will be playoff implications for the Redskins, when that game takes place.

* The last 10 games of the season for the Redskins is absolutely brutal. They play the Giants twice, the Eagles twice, the Cowboys twice, the Steelers on the road, host the Ravens, and also host the up-and-coming Panthers.

The last 10 games are brutal. The Giants twice, Eagles twice, Cowboys twice, Steelers on the road, host the Ravens and Panthers. Sounds like baptism by fire.
