Kyle Shanahan making pre-draft visits to Robert Griffin III to teach Redskins playbook

Courtesy of Chick Hernandez of CSN Washington and Pro Football Talk:

The Redskins can’t draft Robert Griffin III for another three weeks, but they’re already confident enough that he’s their quarterback of the future that they’re teaching him their playbook.

In fact, Redskins offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan has already traveled to Waco, Texas, where Griffin was the Heisman Trophy winner at Baylor, to meet with Griffin. And Chick Hernandez of Comcast SportsNet is reporting Shanahan will visit Griffin a couple times a week for the next several weeks.

This is an unusual situation where a rookie who hasn’t been drafted yet is actually getting more time with his coach than a veteran quarterback would get. Under the rules of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, the Redskins aren’t allowed to open their offseason program yet. But they can visit with Griffin.

It’s also highly unusual that a team without the first overall pick in the draft is going into this kind of detail with a rookie. But the Redskins are confident enough that the Colts will draft Andrew Luck first that they’re already moving forward with Robert Griffin III.

So with nearly four months before the opening of training camp, Griffin is already getting tutored in the offense. Griffin should be ready to take the helm of the offense from Day One.

As the article states, the Redskins are not doing anything that would violate the Collective Bargaining Agreement by visiting Robert Griffin III before selecting him, especially since they are going down to visit him in Waco, where Baylor University is located.

Still, it will be interesting to see whether that tyrant Roger Goodell and his Redskins-hating right hand chronie in John Mara (owner of the New York Giants), will levy and new fines and/or penalties for this, under the ambiguous ruling of “hurting competitive balance (like they did with the salary cap issue).

The reason this never happens is because most teams want to keep their draft plans a secret, even if they have a top pick (or even the top overall pick). This is an extremely rare situation, in that the top two picks, and their likely draft order, are already so etched in stone.

Barring a Hail Mary-esque change of plans, the Colts will take select Andrew Luck from Stanford University, and the Redskins will take Griffin.
