Jets Sign LaRon Landry

LaRon Landry (center), Thunder (left), and Lightning (right) will all not be returning to Washington next season. But don't be fooled by the Cincinatti hat, Landry and his gun show will actually be playing in New York. Photo Credit: bustedcoverage.com

Former Redskin LaRon Landry is now just that; a former Redskin. The safety officially agreed to a contract with the New York Jets today, according to a report by Mike Lombardi of NFL Network. Following the report, Manish Meta of the New York Daily News reported that the deal was for 1 year and $4-million.

Landry was originally drafted sixth overall by the Skins back in the 2007 draft, and despite being quite productive when playing on the field, missed a combined 15 games over the last two seasons. The Redskins will now turn to the recently signed Brandon Merriweather and Cedric Griffin to fill the void at free safety.

Landry’s best season came in 2007, his rookie year, in which he played in all 16 games, obtaining 1.5 sacks, 63 solo tackles, and 32 assists. He also deflected 6 passes and recovered a fumble. It is truly a shame that Landry didn’t take the advice of team doctors on treatment for his Achilles injury in 2010. Instead of getting surgery as advised, Landry got platelet-enriched plasma treatment, which many believe is part of the reason he suffered injury again in 2011. Sad that we’ll never benefit from what Landry could’ve become. But, he’s a Jet now, which means that the Redskins won’t have to play him in 2012.

For the Jets, this could be a very beneficial signing, what with Eric Smith being the only experienced safety on the roster at the moment, but I’ll let you read more about Landry’s future in New York at jetsgab.com
