Morgan Joins Redskins Free Agency-Haul

And the train kept rolling….

In addition to Pierre Garcon and Eddie Royal, the Redskins signed free agent wideout Josh Morgan, formerly of the San Francisco 49ers. Resigning Morgan became less of a priority for the Niners when they agreed to terms with free agent wide receiver Randy Moss on Monday. Morgan returns to his hometown to help quarterback Robert Griffin III put together a successful rookie compaign.

The deal will be worth $12 million in the first two years, with $7.5 million guarenteed. The full contract is five years in length, but  includes a clause where the Redskins can void the final three years in the contract.

Morgan missed most of last season with a fractured ankle, but posted solid numbers as recently as 2010, when he hauled in 44 catches for nearly 700 yards. Though those stats are not extremely impressive, this was at a time where his quarterback was Alex Smith, who had not yet reached the caliber of play he produced in 2011. In 2010, Morgan did still manage 15.9 yards per catch, so he will serve as a nice deep threat for Griffin.

Should the deal be long-term, Morgan would fit in nicely with a youth movement in D.C. Adding him to the 22-year-old Griffin, 26-year-old Garcon, and other youngsters such as Brian Orakpo (25) and Roy Helu (23) should make for a strong young core moving forward. And don’t expect this to be the end.

In the first day of free agency, the Redskins have already made multiple significant moves, adding Garcon and probably Morgan, so fans should be excited as to what the rest of the offseason holds for the Burgundy and Gold.

Seems like the Skins are willing to spend money as if they aren’t getting a cap hit. I hope these over payed signings don’t come back to bite them.

They’ve all got to be approved by the league office. I’m not sure if GOODELL will allow the ‘SKINS to exceed the ceiling or not. maybe SNYDER is testing and will sue if the contracts are disallowed.
