Next Up on the Rumor Mill – QB Kyle Orton

First Peyton Manning – now Kyle Orton.

Seems like the Redskins are going to do whatever it takes to get a QB, and now reports say the team has serious interest in Orton, who wrapped up the 2012 season with the KC Chiefs after getting released by the Denver Broncos midseason.

According to John Keim of the Washington Examiner, the Redskins were interested in Orton when he was on waivers, but did not claim him. CSNWashington reported it was because of potential locker-room friction with current Redskins and former Bears QB Rex Grossman.

One league source said it was much salary related (Orton would have been owed $3 million for one month’s work). By signing Orton, clearly a cheaper alternative than Manning, it would enable the Redskins to focus elsewhere in the draft – and still have a good chunk of change to spend in free agency.

They likely would still draft a quarterback. If they view Orton as a one or two year guy, then maybe it could work – especially if they upgraded the receiving corps to pair with a less error-prone QB.

Just say ‘no’ to ORTON. My least flavorite among FLYNN, MANNING and ORTON. No more former BEARS please.

Do we have cap room to sign all we need from FA this off-season?

    First there’s our guys

    On defense

1 – LONDON FLETCHER has to be re-upped.
2 – I would add KEYRON FOX, so that we don’t leave the necessity of drafting a LB this time around.
3 – Maybe sign BYRON WESTBROOK if the price is right.
    4 – Definitely ADAM CARRIKER

I guess LANDREY will only be back if he tests FA and doesn’t like it.
I would draft a low round DE and let KEDRICK go.

    On offense

1 – Evidently, we will franchise DAVIS for one. That saves a ton of money but won’t improve his atitude any. Plus he’s got a lot to prove. We’re doing him a favor right now by not letting him test FA. Hopefully, he’ll see it that way.
2 – WIL MONTGOMERY in the house fairly cheap. Not a lot of teams use our blocking scheme.
    3 – Maybe TIM HIGHTOWER on a one-year make-good deal.
4 – Ditto DONTE STALLWORTH if the cap room’s not there for another FA WR.

Except for LONDON’s retirement contract that shouldn’t break the bank.

But what we should add via FA might.

    1 – QB
    2 – K
    3 – LG
    4 – WR
    5 – NT
    6 – CB
    7 – Prolly SS

I don’t know if there’s enough cap room for all that or not.

Kicker CONNER BARTH should be fairly inexpensive, and the NT AUBRAYO FRANKLIN would not be terribly expensive. CB WILLIAM GAY either as we’re looking for a nickel-back.

But the two SS’s that are worth their salt in FA are pricey as is the WR,

And the LG I have in mind will command a huge contract – CARL NICKS.

And then there’s the QB. Sounds like the brain-trust is looking for the inexpensive option there so we can add the others..

And MATT, thank you for working over-time to keep us abreast of the latest on all things REDSKINS.

CARL NICKS current contract 2.6+ Mill. FRANKLIN 4.0 MILL. BARTH 1.9 MILL. How much do we have to work with?
