Report: Peyton Manning’s Next Destination — Nation’s Capital

Mike Freeman of CBS Sports reports that “everyone” he talks to in the NFL believes Peyton Manning will become a Redskin if and when he becomes a free agent.  This comes on the heels of a weekend report from two people close to Manning saying “it is very likely” Manning will end up with the Redskins.

It is clear both the Redskins and the Dolphins will pursue Manning.  Redskins coach Mike Shanahan cannot afford another losing season if he wants to keep his job and for once the Redskins have plenty of salary cap room.  It is also believed that the Arizona Cardinals have interest but owner Bill Bidwill may balk at ponying up for Manning a year after the Cardinals paid dearly for the failed Kevin Kolb experiment.

If so the Skins better get the top o-lineman with the 1st pick and get the best free agent o-lineman available. Hell they might want to get the best o-lineman available with the 2nd pick as well. With a great o-line even a mediocre QB can win a super bowl. The Redskins are proof of that.

Well if we franchise DAVIS and let LANDRY go via the FA route, we still must take a FA at SS, or in the draft.

After TYVON BRANCH and MICHAEL GRIFFIN, the FA market really tails off, and the pickings get thin in a hurry in the draft. There are no LaRON LANDRY’s coming out this year.

Not a good scenerio for the REDSKINS. REED DOUGHTY is not the answer; solid in run support, almost always late in coverage. My mock was to pick WINSTON GUY Jr. in the third and let a franchised LANDRY tutor him for one year.

Along the o-line, there is some hope.

TRENT WILLIAMS will stop smoking weed. A BIG if!!!!!

WILLIE SMITH could adequately fill CORY LICHTENSTEIGER’s LG slot. MAURICE HURT may not be the back-up answer there. LICHTENSTEIGER is done. CARL NICKS would be the optimum answer with SMITH as back-up, but a big, BIG contract would be required.

Re-signing WIL MONTGOMERY should be relatively easy because he doesn’t fit the schemes of a lot of clubs. ERIK COOK is not going to be the answer at center lomg-term. FA CHRIS MYERS from TEXAS does fit the system, and should be available for a reasonable contract.

CHRIS CHESTER was solid once he got his bearings. I have been mocking BRANDON WASHINGTON of MIAMI as his back-up with the late 4-round pick.

I’m mocking MIKE ADAMS from OSU as the 2nd rounder picked to replace JAMMAL BROWM in the starting line-up. If BROWN can stand up to limited duty, he should become the back-up tackle, and SEAN LOCKLEAR should become a ghost in burgandy and gold.

All this is of course an exercise in futility at this point. FA must play out first. After 3/13 we’ll have a much better idea of what final needs the draft will have to provide.

One final comment. Even if we have to [shudder] re-sign REX the GROSS-man for another year and play him, go get the best FA kicker to be available in ages, CONNER BARTH. That one move alone would add two wins in 2012.
