Adam Schefter: Redskins expected to pursue Peyton Manning, if released

ESPN’s Adam Schefter dropped this little bombshell on Twitter, a little earlier this morning:

If Peyton Manning is released, Redskins are expected to pursue him. Redskins also prepared to pursue free agents Matt Flynn and Kyle Orton.

There have been continued “whispers” all offseason that Peyton Manning is on the Redskins wish list, but none of these rumors have been stated with the same level of certainty – nor from any source of similar credibility – as what Schefter is saying.

Interestingly, while the first sentence is the real headline-grabber, the second sentence may actually be slightly more revealing. There has been a huge contingent of Redskins fans who believe they should (or will) select a quarterback with an early pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, namely Robert Griffin III from Baylor University.

But if the Redskins are targeting Matt Flynn or Kyle Orton in addition to Manning, this is likely a signal that head coach Mike Shanahan and the Redskins front office aren’t interested in waiting for a young QB to develop, and are more interested in finding a “ready-to-go” solution.

This is my current 53-man construct provided we sign a FA QB as we’ve done both years of the SHANAHAN era. This assumes a trade down and out of the #6 slot for which we pick up another 2-round choice. Otherwise, totally different construct.

    QB [2]

    Starter

    MATT FLYNN – FA

    Back-up

    REX GROSSMAN – re-sign

    RB [4]

    ROY HELU
    EVAN ROYSTER
    TIM HIGHTOWER – re-sign
CHRIS POLK – RB 2nd round Washington

    TE [3]

    CHRIS COOLEY
DWAYNE ALLEN – TE 1st round Clemson
    LOGAN PAULSON

    WR [7]

    SANTANA MOSS
    DWAYNE BOWE – FA
    JABBAR GAFFNEY
    LEONARD HANKERSON
    NILES PAUL
    ANTHONY ARMSTRONG
    BRANDON BANKS

    O-line 2012 [9]

    LT – TRENT WILLIAMS
LG – CARL NICKS – FA
    C – WIL MONTGOMERY – re-sign
    RG – CHRIS CHESTER
RT – MIKE ADAMS – RT 2nd round OSU

    Back-ups

    JAMMAL BROWN
    BRANDON WASHINGTON – G 4th round Miami
    SCOTT WELLS – FA

    LS
    NICK SUNDBERG

    D-line 2012 [8]

    DE – JARVIS JENKINS
NT – AUBRAYO FRANKLIN – FA
    DE – BARRY COFIELD

    Back-ups

    ADAM CARRIKER
    CHRIS NEILD
    STEPHEN BOWEN
    DARRIUS SCOTT
ETHAN JOHNSON – DE 7th round UNC

    LB [8]

    BRIAN ORAKPO
    PERRY RILEY
    LONDON FLETCHER – re-sign
    RYAN KERRIGAN

    Back-ups

    ROB JACKSON
    MARKUS WHITE
    KEYRON FOX – re-sign
    LORENZO ALEXANDER

    CB [5]

    JOSH WILSON
    DeANGELO HALL
    WILLIAM GAY – FA
    BRANDYN THOMPSON
JAMELL FLEMING – CB 5th round Oklahoma

    S [5]

    Starters

    OSHIOMOGHO ATOGWE
    LaRON LANDREY – re-sign

    Back-ups

    DeJON GOMES
WINSTON GUY JR. – SS 3rd round Kentucky
TRUMAINE JOHNSON – FS 4th round Boise State

    K – CONNER BARTH – FA
    P – SAV ROCCA

This leaves VIKINGS 6th pick for best available.

And from this article, it appears SHANAHAN will pursue the FA option which he has both years he’s been here which is why I made the construct assuming a FA QB, and a trade down for another 2nd round pick.

    NOTE TO ALLEN:

Just say no to KYLE ORTON. And no picks for either FLYNN or MANNING.

    Change:

I’m mocking CHRIS MYERS [TEXANS] at center over SCOTT WELLS simply because MYERS should be a cheaper option and plays well in SHANAHAN’s zone-blocking schemes. As limited teams use this type of blocking, interest in MYERS should be limited, and he should be a less expensive acquisition.

CARL NICKS is the answer on the o-line. Get him and everything else falls into place.

    WILLIAMS
    NICKS – FA
    MONTGOMERY – re-sign
    CHESTER
    ADAMS – 2nd round #39 pick.

    SUNDBERG

    Back-up

    BROWN
    MYERS – FA
    WASHINGTON – 4th round Miami
