Should Helu be the starter at RB?

Why isn’t Roy Helu the starting running back?

Ryan Torain, the Redskins’ starting running back on Sunday against Dallas, is the team’s third-leading rusher since the Bye Week.

The team’s top runner during that span is Helu, yet, coach Mike Shanahan appears hesitant to hand (although, he has earned it) the rookie the starting job, according to Rick Maese of the Washington Post.

“I like Helu. He’s doing some great things,” Shanahan said. “I don’t want to put too much pressure on him too early. He’s not ready for that. But he’s gaining experience, and I like what I see.”

The former Cornhusker standout said Monday that coaches haven’t issued any notion concerning him taking over the lead gig in the backfield.

“That’s something we keep in-house,” he said. “We talk amongst each other. The obvious thing is throughout the practice week, coach selects who he thinks is going to be the best person to win the game and start the game.”

I believe it’s time for the fifth round choice out of Nebraska to receive his opportunity to shine – he deserves it.
