Redskins must reduce roster to 53 players by 6pm today

News continues to trickle in today, as the Redskins front office is in the process of choosing which players will remain on the final 53 man roster, which must be set by 6pm today. Various news outlets are reporting that the following players have been cut, released, or will not be back with the team in 2011:

QB Kellen Clemens
RB Keiland Williams
WR Aldrick Robinson
TE Tony Curtis
OL Selvish Capers
OL Artis Hicks
OL Maurice Hurt
OL Clint Oldenburg
OL Donovan Raiola
DL Jeff Stehle
LB Horatio Blades
LB Thaddeus Gibson
LB Edgar Jones
DB Reggie Jones

In addition, several news outlets – lead by Comcast Sports Net – are reporting that tight end (and converted fullback) Mike Sellars, as well as veteran receiver Donte Stallworth, both will be a part of the Redskins final roster.

News of the latter’s addition to the roster either leaves receiver Leonard Hankerson (the team’s 3rd round pick out of the University of Miami) or receiver Niles Paul (the team’s 5th round pick out of the University of Nebraska) on the proverbial bubble, and not likely to make the final 53 man squad.

  1. 007 says:

Off his play at the end of last season and his x-games efforts this one, ROB JACKSON gets my nod over H.B. BLADES.

  2. 007 says:

The o-line will come up short this season once the injuries begin rolling in.

    Center:

Maybe WIL MONTGOMERY will be better than CASEY RABACH, but despite WIL’s excellent technique, he’s small for the position. I’m concerned that a bull-rush up the middle on obvious passing downs will often result in sacks, hurries, and injuries. I see ERIC COOK struggling. NICK SUNDBERG appears to be solidifying his position as the long-snapper. I won’t forget the ‘Red Snapper’ for a long time, however.

    Guard:

CHRIS CHESTER and CORY LICHTENSTEIGER appear to be stabilizing the interior line, but an injury will occur here and behind them are ARTIS HICKS and CLINT OLDENBURG, names that give me the willies after seeing their play last year and this.

    Tackle:

No worries about TRENT WILLIAMS, and JAMMAL BROWN. Again, the play of LOCKLEAR and WILLIE SMITH have left something to be desired in my eyes.

  3. 007 says:

NILES PAUL will be this year’s KEENAN McCARDELL if he’s cut. He will never see the practice squad as a REDSKIN.

  4. 007 says:

    5:10 and counting.

  5. 007 says:

HICKS, OLDENBURG, RAIOLA, HURT, CAPERS cut.

Eight receivers? Plueeze. I smell a trade coming on.

NILES PAUL or TERRANCE AUSTIN for a back-up guard.

The team is carrying too few o-linemen with a struggling ERIC COOK the only back-up at three positions.

    Tackles WILLIAMS, BROWN solid.

SMITH, and LOCKLEAR back-up tackles are at best adequate for the moment.

A new starter at center [Montgomery] with a soph back-up [COOK]. Scary!

Two decent starting guards {LICHTENSTEIGER, CHESTER] with in essence no back-ups is an injury away from a major crisis on the o-line.

This team is going to suffer severely until some receivers/draft picks can be dealt for some o-linemen. I hope the two q-b’s have dental insurance.
