Redskins sign QB Matt Gutierrez

After releasing quarterback Marc Verica this morning – an undrafted rookie out of the University of Virginia, who was likely going to be nothing more than training camp fodder anyway – the Redskins signed fourth-year journeyman quarterback Matt Gutierrez.

Gutierrez’s resume includes stops in New England (where his career began), Kansas City, Chicago, and Omaha of the UFL. He graduated from Idaho State, after originally starting his career at Michigan State (clearly, travelling and pulling up roots does not seem to be an issue for him). He’s appeared in a grand total of six NFL games, and hasn’t thrown an NFL pass since 2009.

After being released by the Bears (his most recent stop), the Redskins were the first team to contact Gutierrez, despite him not really having any experience with Mike & Kyle Shanahan’s offense. Gutierrez becomes the fifth quarterback on the team’s roster, joining John Beck, Rex Grossman, Kellen Clemens, and rookie Ben Chappell.
