OL “Big” Mike Williams released by Redskins

It looks like the comeback story of Mike Williams has come to an end.

In a press release announcing recent signings and releases, the big offensive lineman’s name was listed under players whose contracts were terminated.

Williams was a great story in 2009 when he played after being out of the game for three years. He had to lose over 100 pounds to be able to do it. He persevered and started eight games.

But last year before training camp Williams was diagnosed with some blood clots that threatened to cause heart problems. He was put on the non-football illness list.

He was planning to give it a go this year but there was a recurrence of the blood clots in February and that pretty well ended his chances. Even had the health issue gone away completely, he likely would have had a major challenge in trying to make the roster of a team trying to get younger. At 31 years old and having been out of the game four of the previous five years, the odds were stacked against him.
