Trent Williams comments on absence from player-organized practices

As the Redskins embark on their second day of their second session of player-organized practices, more than a few eyebrows were raised and whispers were made when offensive tackle Trent Williams remained a no-show.

Williams has not participated in any of these activities, to date. While we know that he’s been working out in Houston with a contingent of fellow NFL players (most notably, All Pro running back Adrian Peterson of the Vikings), many people have commented on how Williams should be at these sessions as a show of solidarity with the team, and to better enhance his grasp of the team’s playbook.

Rich Campbell of the Washington Times was able to contact Williams via phone. Here’s what Williams (and Campbell) had to say:

“I’m down here [in Houston] working out on my own,” Williams said by phone Wednesday afternoon. “I’m working just like they’re working.”

Williams said he didn’t learn of this week’s workouts until receiver Malcolm Kelly called him on Monday, the day before they began. Players organizing the workouts have spread the word about them through email. “I think they send out emails,” Williams said, “and I didn’t get an email.”

He also was under the impression that this workout was for quarterbacks and receivers.

“I found out last minute on this one,” he said. “It was a little bit too late for me to pick up and go last minute.”

Asked if he would attend another set of workouts if the Redskins hold them again later this summer, he said: “I wouldn’t be opposed to it.”

For those wondering if Williams is going to show up in Ashburn after the lockout looking like the Pillsbury Doughboy, he said he currently weighs 320 pounds—three pounds less than his playing weight last season. He has been boxing three times a week “to try to help my endurance and better hand speed,” he said.

As for any negative impressions his teammates are developing about his absences: “I wouldn’t see a reason to feel any certain way about it,” he said. “I’m trying to play at the top level and help the team get to the Super Bowl.”
