Changes Coming in 2011 with the Redskins Offense?

Rich Tandler of believes their will be numerous changes in the Redskins’ offensive roster by the time training camp ends. One change he sees coming is the waiving of wide receiver Malcolm Kelly.

“Doesn’t seem to be a Shanny-type player, think he’s out,” writes Tandler. The 51st overall choice in the 2008 draft, Kelly has just 28 career catches without a touchdown. Kelly has trouble getting separation and staying healthy and the entire wide receiver corps was sent a clear message when the ‘Skins used three of their 2011 draft picks on receivers.

Tandler also believes there will be major changes in the Redskin backfield. Clinton Portis was released in February and Tandler does not believe the opening day starter will be Ryan Torain.

Already the league’s most injury-prone back, Torain will have a tougher time than usual staying healthy with no structured offseason and training camps in jeopardy. Even if he stays healthy, Tandler believes 4th round draft pick Roy Helu out of Nebraska could “flat beat him out for the starting job.” We wouldn’t rule out a free agent addition to Mike Shanahan’s backfield, either.

  1. I’d like to see Kelly get another chance. I think health has been a bigger issue than separation, as he’s a pretty good route runner.

I think Torain, Royster, and Helu (in that order to start with) will be holding an open competition. If only one of them blocks well, he will start. If they all block well, the competition will likely continue with split carries into the regular season…

The 3rd place finisher in the battle will have to battle with Williams for the 3rd down job, with the main criteria being blocking and receiving. If Torain and Williams hold their jobs, Royster will either end up on the practice squad or Sellers will be cut, with Young taking over FB and Paulsen the emergency backup FB.
