Orakpo Talks About the Vince Young to Redskins Rumors

The hot rumor right now involving the Redskins is that the team has an interest in bringing in Titans QB Vince Young. LB Brian Orakpo, who played with Young at Texas, was asked by reporters about the rumor, and stated the following in the Washington Post.

“As far as football and what he’s gonna do in the future, haven’t really gotten that aspect of it, but I wish him the best and we’ll see,” Orakpo said. “I mean, it’s all speculation. We really can’t tell what’s gonna go on.” Later, though, Orakpo offered a strong endorsement of Young’s abilities. “He was a great player, great leader for our team for the time when I was there in Texas,” Orakpo told the Examiner’s John Keim. “He’s so athletic and he’s a great, great competitor, man, a great playmaker. Obviously things haven’t been going well for him in his NFL career, but he’s still a young kid, a young guy, and he still has a future ahead of him. Any team that picks him up, man, I know what type of player [he is]. Once you get the best out of the man, and forget all the hoopla surrounding him, he’s gonna be a hell of a player.”

The big question about Young is what do the Redskins do with Donovan McNabb if they do pick up Young? The team has been rumored to be ready to ship McNabb to Minnesota or possibly even Arizona. If that happens and Young comes to the club, he would likely compete for playing time with Rex Grossman, who started some games last season for McNabb after he was benched.

  1. The media makes it out like Young is a bad guy. Maybe he didn’t do the things Fisher wanted, but it isn’t like he’s Vick or something.

Having said that, McNabb was a class act when he played for the worst fans in football and again last year under some feminine style coaching indecision…why not give him another year since he’s under a long-term bargain contract with DC?

Grossman has proven less than adequate every season in the NFL, it’s time to let him go back to Houston.

What a QB does as a rookie tends to have very little statistical correlation with his career. Beck hasn’t played since being a rookie and I was really disappointed he wasn’t the guy learning the offense the end of last year. He’s another guy on a bargain contract and he’s coming into a season where most young QBs make or break, so I want to see what he’s got…far better to have a bench seasoned former second rounder than to spend a second round pick on a rookie QB.

So how about McNabb, Beck, and Young battle it out for the chance to play behind the world OL in Redskins history….every one of them has tons of physical gifts, comes at a bargain, and only one needs to shine and stay healthy for this team to begin rebuilding behind a leader.
