QB John Beck working hard to become Redskins starting QB?

With the NFL Draft being only eight days away, the Redskins have been linked with nearly every draft-eligible quarterback prospect available. But an incumbent on their roster is doing everything he can to hopefully force a potential rookie signal caller to sit on the bench.

Quarterback John Beck, who has been sharing snaps with Rex Grossman at the informal, volunteer Redskins “minicamp” (which has taken place over the last two days at a Northern Virginia high school), indicated that he’s approaching this offseason with the mindset of becoming the Redskins starting quarterback in 2011.

Beck told reporters that he’s been training with Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees in San Diego this offseason (he did the same prior to the 2010 season as well), in hopes of improving his game. While he plans to return to San Diego to resume his training after the “minicamp” is complete, he does plan to stay around for an extra day, so he can get a little more time to throw to the wide receivers who are also attending (such as Anthony Armstrong and Malcolm Kelly, among others).

From Rich Campbell of the Fredericksburg Free Lance-Star:

“I want to be the guy,” Beck said after a 70-minute practice. “When I’m in the weight room training, when I’m at home watching tape, when I’m going over my scripts, when I’m preparing, I’m trying to be the starter. And Rex knows I want to be the starter. In my head, that’s the way I’m planning.”

And more:

Beck, who turns 30 in August, played for the Redskins last preseason, but it’s unfair to judge him mere days into the process of learning a new offense. He spent all but two weeks last season running scout team plays in practice.

So although Beck has been in the Redskins’ offense for only nine months, he has been in NFL meetings and practices for four seasons now. He possesses many of the traits that have prompted analysts to opine that certain quarterbacks in this year’s draft class would fit in Washington. He’s athletic, smart and can throw on the run. He doesn’t possess elite arm strength, but that’s not necessarily a dealbreaker.
