Are the Redskins actively trying to trade down?

The latest rumor du jour surrounding the Redskins and their 10th overall selection in this year’s NFL draft, in typical fashion for this offseason, contradicts a report about the Redskins considering trading up in the draft that surfaced a few days ago.

Pete Prisco of reports the following:

There have been some reports that the Washington Redskins are looking to trade up to draft a quarterback.

I hear it’s the exact opposite.

According to a league source, the Redskins are looking to trade down in the first round with the idea they will draft either Florida State quarterback Christian Ponder or TCU quarterback Andy Dalton.

Prisco does go on to say that the proverbial apple of the Redskins eye still remains Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert – and that the Redskins would pounce at the opportunity to draft Gabbert if he were available at that pick – but the majority of mock draft projections have Gabbert being gone by the eight pick (belonging to the Tennessee Titans), and that’s even in a worst case scenario.

Even in a draft class rich with talent at the quarterback position, we could see some serious jockeying for position, when it comes to drafting some of the blue chip passing prospects (namely Gabbert and Cam Newton of Auburn). At least four of the nine teams picking ahead of the Redskins all have some level of need at the quarterback position (Buffalo, Arizona, San Francisco, Tennessee), and several other teams (Carolina, Denver, Cincinnati) have all been rumored to have interest in drafting a quarterback despite having an incumbent starter in place.

So the Redskins chances of drafting Gabbert with the 10th overall pick remain highly doubtful at best. That’s why a trade down makes a lot more sense for the team, considering how high they’d likely have to trade up (and the subsequent cost that would require) in order to fully secure their chances of getting Gabbert.

  1. […] Ponder was linked to the Redskins in a report last week by’s Pete Prisco, who indicated that he could be a target for the Redskins, should they trade down in the first round. While Ponder has been “graded” as a second round by many scouting services and projected to in that round by many mock drafts, the demand for quarterbacks in this year’s draft could cause him to rise into the bottom half of the first round.
