Shanahan’s not in attendace for Cam Newton’s workout

Ryan O’Halloran, the Redskins beat for CSNwashington.com, mentioned via Twitter yesterday that both head coach Mike Shanahan and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan were at Redskins Park yesterday.

While this may seem like an innocuous “tweet” in general, the reason why it’s significant is that both coaches were in Ashburn, and not in Little Rock or Auburn to watch the Pro Day workouts for Ryan Mallett and Cam Newton. Both ESPN Draft Analysts Mel Kiper Jr. and Todd McShay have projected that the Redskins would select Newton in recent mock drafts. This would make sense, considering the Redskins do not appear to have any long-term stability at quarterback position, and could badly use a player that can stabilize what has been a revolving-door position for the better part of this decade.

However, in his press conference before the NFL Scouting Combine, (Mike) Shanahan mentioned that the Redskins could perhaps lean away from taking one of the top quarterback prospects with their first round pick, and maybe select a “second tier” prospect in later rounds.

Now, this is certainly not to say that the Redskins will not invite Newton to Washington for a private workout in front of both coaches and team brass. If nothing else, they’d likely due so for their own due dilligence.

But the fact that both Shanahan’s were at home yesterday should hopefully quell some of the “Newton will be a Redskin next year” talks, at least temporarily.
