Free Agent Oshiomogho Atogwe to visit the Redskins

According to Howard Balzer of ESPN 101 in St. Louis:

[Oshiomogho “O. J.” Atogwe], who was released Friday because the team wouldn’t pay an $8 million bonus that was due today if he had been on the roster, is scheduled to visit today with the Washington Redskins. The Redskins’ defensive coordinator is Jim Haslett, who was with the Rams from 2006-2008.

Said Atogwe, “My agent has been talking to a few teams and we have discussed the possibility of going to different places. I’ll meet with them (Redskins) and see what’s up.”

Atogwe played free safety for the Rams, a position of need for the Redskins, who probably haven’t been satisfied with the inconsistency of current starter Kareem Moore. Atogwe’s best attribute has been attacking the football and causing turnovers, an area the Redskins have struggled with for the past several years. Pairing a Pro Bowl caliber player like Atogwe with another Pro Bowl caliber safety in Laron Landry would provide a formidable safety corps.

Here’s another interesting point that Balzer mentioned:

A team’s defensive system could play a role in the decision he makes.

Said Atogwe, “That will be part of the decision, playing the position I’m most comfortable in. I’ve been blessed to have been able to do so much, to play so many schemes and have a comfort level to being anywhere on the field whether it’s deep middle, deep pass, quarters, up close, blitzing.

“Largely, it will come down just to the best fit from a family standpoint, a city standpoint and, of course, football. Just where I believe in my heart will be the best fit for me to do what I’m blessed to do.”

Atogwe enjoyed his best season in 2007, record an NFC-high 8 interceptions along with 75 tackles and one touchdown and forced two fumbles, when current Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett was employed in the same role in St. Louis. So theoretically, if he doesn’t price himself out of the Redskins budget, Atogwe’s signing could be a very seamless integration into the defense.
