Let's play the "What-If" game…

Happy new year and new off season — one for looking forward and one for reflecting on what ifs.

My biggest what if of 2010 is Jason Campbell.

Here”s a quarterback that we let go for a 4th round pick.

A quarterback for whom a replacement was brought in that cost us dollars and costly draft picks.

A quarterback who was more accustomed to being leveled by defensive linemen than having enough time to make a 3 step drop to deliver the ball.

A quarterback who fit the description of what Shanahan likes: big, strong-armed and elusive.

A quarterback who was smart enough to learn a new offense every year since he was drafted by the skins (1st round in 2005).

So why did Shanahan let Campbell go? Was it pressure from the fan base? Pressure from the owner? Ego?

And why were some of us so enthusiastic about Campbell”s departure? He fought hard for us and worked his ass off to make Zorn”s offense look better than the dysfunctional bastard it was.

Was Campbelll the best quarterback out there? No. But take a look at these QB ratings from 2009–especially the difference between #12 and #15.

I don”t know what information Shanahan had to go on in order to make such a swift and costly change at the quarterback position when what we had could have been the answer to his needs.

Obviously looking back is easy. Hindsight is 20/20 and all that jazz. But Shanahan is getting paid millions of dollars not to make these kinds of mistakes and it”s obvious that he and Allen didn”t do their homework and should be held accountable…not McNabb.

They were brought in to the Skins organization and falsely personified as football Gods with the Midas touch who were going to fix everything that had broken down over 10 years. And they were going to do it with a quarterback named McNabb.

That”s a long shot, but then again, so was the Redskins going to the post season and neither happened yet.

Look forward to 2011 and learning from our mistakes.
