Portis unlikely to play Sunday against Green Bay

Regardless of Portis: Ryan Torain is the clear-cut #1 option for Washington at RB.

From practice squad to starting squad, it happens that fast in the NFL.

Washington Post’s Jason Reid has gone out and voiced during his weekly radio show appearance that Portis’ groin injury will more than likely keep him out of action this week, hindering him from playing at home against the Packers this Sunday.

Portis said he believes he will be in street clothes for the Week 5 showdown against 3-1 Green Bay at FedEx Field.

“I don’t think so,” he said of playing against the Packers. “I don’t think the team would even let me attempt to go and try to play on Sunday.”

This despite not receiving a result from his MRI:

Portis said he was still “waiting for ’em to come in. I’m waiting to hear back from the doctors now. I did the MRI. Just waiting to hear back from the doctors.”

He’s quickly doubting any chance to play.

Nonetheless, whether you believe Portis or not, or want to read outside the line, you can get the picture that the team is better off suited with Torain as their lead back and Clinton giving his troublesome groin a rest for a week.  Groin injuries can be problematic, and Coach Shanahan knows Portis better than anyone on the team, so you have to expect him to make the best decision concerning his running back.

As for Torain, the time has come, he’s finally healthy, and ready to take full advantage of his first real opportunity in the NFL.  This kid is something special, he can just tell by his physical running ability -he can flat out run between the tackles.  Torain’s the complete package, and to believe the team invited him to participate in their mini-camp as a non-roster player exactly six months ago to this date in April, just startling.  However, it was a change you knew was coming, a change that could be permanent, and a change that could propel the Skins rushing attack to higher ground in effort to improve an inconsistent offense.

I agree with you that Torain is the better fit right now and it’s time to see what he can do as a feature back. Let Portis heal up and give this kid a full workload and see what happens. I like him and the power he has shown on his runs. He looks like the real deal and now it’s time to find out!
