Trent Williams improving, status for Sunday unknown

Via the Washington Post:

Left tackle Trent Williams, who is suffering from knee and toe injuries, continued to improve and hopes to practice Friday in an attempt to play against the St. Louis Rams, Coach Mike Shanahan said Thursday.

“We’ll get a chance to see how he feels [Friday],” Shanahan said of the rookie, who has played well in his first two games. Williams was “much better today. He was able to jog and be on the treadmill for a while, so we’ll check him out [Friday].”

If Williams can’t go on Sunday versus the Rams, my guess would be that Jammal Brown will remain on the right side to maintain as much continuity as possible, especially since it doesn’t appear that big Trent will be out for long. Stephon Heyer will man the critical Left Tackle spot then, but surely not without a lot of blocking/protection help from the tight ends and running backs.

I’d be curious to see if the Redskins go with more two tight end sets this game (Chris Cooley and Fred Davis), where one stays in to assist in blocking, while the other provides another pass catching option against a vulnerable Rams secondary.
