Tuesday Practice / Notes

  • QB Donovan McNabb (ankle), LB Perry Riley (foot) and FB Mike Sellers (knee) are not practicing Tuesday morning. But RB Clinton Portis returned to practice. Portis had injured his ankle vs. the New York Jets on Friday.
  • RT Jammal Brown was not practicing Tuesday, though it’s uncertain why he’s sitting out. Brown missed a week earlier in camp because of hip soreness; he had surgery on his left hip last September.
  • WR Malcolm Kelly (hamstring) also is not practicing Tuesday. Kelly re-injured his left hamstring attempting to practice Monday. But Kelly was on the field this morning participating in the stretching portion.
  • Rex Grossman will start at QB Thursday against Arizona, but he won’t play long, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said. Coach Mike Shanahan usually does not play either of his top two QBs in the preseason finale.
  • QB Donovan McNabb is expected to practice next week in preparation for the season opener, offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan said. McNabb has not practiced since spraining his ankle Aug. 21 against Baltimore.
  • WR Malcolm Kelly has been placed on injured reserve. Kelly had tried to return Monday after not practicing in full since July 29, but he re-injured his left hamstring.
  • The Redskins could release WR Malcolm Kelly off IR once he’s healthy in about six weeks, but coach Mike Shanahan likes his work ethic and would like to see what he can do on the field.
  • WR Devin Thomas, a second-round pick along with Malcolm Kelly in 2008, is also squarely on the proverbial bubble. He’s been inconsistent this summer and needs a big game vs. Arizona on Thursday to stick around.
  • The Redskins have released S Lendy Holmes, long snapper James Dearth and OL Edwin Williams. Because they put WR Malcolm Kelly on injured reserve, the Redskins have to release only one more player to get to 75.
  • With the Redskins releasing LS James Dearth, that appears to give the job to first-year Nick Sundberg. Early in camp Sundberg struggled, but he’s been very consistent the past three weeks while Dearth’s snaps consistently were high.
  • In an odd exchange, the Redskins have released DE/OLB Hall Davis, who they acquired Monday in a trade with the Rams. Davis had just two practices with the Redskins after playing in three preseason games with the Rams and recording a pair of sacks.
  • One reason why the Redskins might not keep RBs Clinton Portis , Larry Johnson and Willie Parker ? None of them plays special teams. Offensive coordinator Kyle Shahanan said: “That’s always tough; one of them has to contribute on special teams.” Portis, though, is a lock to make the team.
