Monday Practice Report & Notes

• QB Donovan McNabb (ankle) is not practicing Monday morning, but he did go through stretching exercises wearing his helmet, something he had not done since hurting his ankle. He also was wearing a compression sock on his left leg.

• WR Malcolm Kelly is practicing Tuesday, trying to survive an entire session for the first time since July 29. Kelly’s pulled hamstring has put him on the bubble, but a lack of depth at WR gives him a shot at making the final roster.

• WR Joey Galloway and TE Dennis Morris weren’t at practice during the portion open to the media Monday. The reason for their absence is unknown.

• Joining WR Joey Galloway and TE Dennis Morris on the sideline Monday was LB Perry Riley. He is not practicing because of a foot injury.

• RB Clinton Portis (ankle) also isn’t practicing. Portis, like the other starters, isn’t scheduled to play Thursday vs. Arizona anyway. Coach Mike Shanahan said Sunday that he hoped Portis would return to practice this week.

• WR Malcolm Kelly re-injured his left hamstring in practice, a severe setback for a player who had not participated in a full workout since July 29. Coach Mike Shanahan said he has had players make the roster before who missed all of camp.

• The Redskins have a choice to make with WR Malcolm Kelly, who suffered a setback Monday with his pulled hamstring. He has good hands but also major durability issues dating to college.

• The Redskins have traded TE Dennis Morris, a rookie sixth-round pick, to the Rams for a conditional draft pick. Morris had not impressed coaches and had been working as the No. 5 TE all summer. He looked slow and was not as physical as the others.

• In the trade of TE Dennis Morris to St. Louis, the Redskins are looking at Rams DL Hall Davis, though coach Mike Shanahan called him a LB, the position he’d likely play in a 3-4. Shanahan termed the trade conditional.

• The Rams and Redskins swapped a pair of Louisana rookies Monday. DE Hall Davis (Louisiana-Lafayette) was sent to Washington for FB Dennis Morris (Louisiana Tech). Davis had two sacks against Cleveland in the second preseason game.

• There’s a chance the Redskins might only keep two of their six draft picks, but coach Mike Shanahan isn’t bothered. “The worst thing people do is keep a draft pick just to keep a draft pick,” he said.

• The Redskins clarified Monday’s trades: They traded TE Dennis Morris  to St. Louis for an undisclosed conditional draft pick and received LB/DE Hall Davis from the Rams also for an undisclosed conditional pick.
