Haynesworth Situation Being Monitored By Players Association

Mike Shanahan, although clearly in charge, may want to yield to good reason at some point.  While running Albert Haynesworth into the ground fully, repeatedly, and to the point of embarrassment at training camp may be EXACTLY WHAT REDSKINS FANS WANT TO SEE in the wake of Haynesworth’s selfish actions of avoiding OTA’s, mini-camps, and workouts even after pocketing $21 million… but the NFL Players Association is watching with a close eye. And it could get uglier. Via PFT:

The Collective Bargaining Agreement prevents retaliation against players who opt not to volunteer to work for free (but for the per diem) in the offseason, and the union has been much more aggressive of late in taking on abuses of the offseason workout rules.

As to Haynesworth, an NFLPA source tells us that the union is monitoring the situation closely, but that no action will be taken at this time.  Despite somewhat popular misconceptions that the union c\an push a grievance without the affected player’s approval or involvement, nothing can happen unless the player initiates the process.

I would not be at all surprised if a grievance is filed. And whatever the consequences, the story unfolding like it has completely been worth it.
