Mike Shanahan Golfs With ‘Skins Greats

Matt Terl has a pretty cool update over at the Redskins Blog about Mike Shanahan teeing it up with Mark Rypien and Joe Theismann at the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Nevada:

When I talked to Rick “Doc” Walker about his idea for a Redskins Alumni Match Play Golf Tournament, he listed Super Bowl XXVI MVP Mark Rypien as the Redskins alum who was the best golfer, because he had golfed competitively in the public eye.

“The only guy I know that’s done it publicly, under pressure, is Rypien,” Walked told me. “I don’t know if Joe [Theismann]’s done it to that level. For me, that’s the whole thing. If you do it publicly, that makes you as close to a semi-pro as anything I can think of. Everybody else, we don’t know if they’re picking up the ball [or something], but when Ryp did it, it was in competition.”

Well, Doc might need to revise his rankings.

Not only did Theismann (on the left above) golf competitively in public (at the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course in Nevada), he did so in a group WITH Rypien (on the right) and current Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan (center). I think it’s safe to say that SOMEone would’ve noticed if Theismann was picking up the ball or something.

That said, the oddsmakers agree with Doc’s overall assessment.Of those three, Rypien has the best odds to win (according to Harrah’s Entertainment via the Lahontan Valley News) at 12-1. Theismann isn’t far behind, at 18-1, while Shanahan is down with Taylor Hicks, Ray Romano, Lou Holtz, and Jack Del Rio (among others) at 200-1.

Just to further irritate Redskins fans, Cowboys QB Tony Romo is a favorite at 5-2 odds and playing in a group with Michael Jordan and Ray Allen (although Troy Aikman’s 50-1 odds should avoid any accusation of bias).
