Chargers Confirm 3 Game Suspension For Vincent Jackson

Via NFP:

The San Diego Chargers confirmed the previously reported three-game suspension for wide receiver Vincent Jackson.

Jackson is being punished for violating the NFL substance-abuse policy. Specifically, he twice pleaded guilty to driving under the influence.

“Vincent Jackson of the San Diego Chargers has been suspended without pay for the first three games of the 2010 regular season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse,” an NFL spokesman said. “Jackson’s suspension begins on Saturday, September 4. He will be eligible to return to the Chargers’ active roster on Monday, September 27 following the team’s September 26 game against the Seattle Seahawks. Jackson is eligible to participate in all preseason practices and games.”

Jackson is an unsigned restricted free agent who had been planning to hold out anyway.

“Obviously we’re disappointed,” Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said in a statement. “Vincent made a mistake and now must deal with the consequences. It’s unfortunate, but we’ll deal with it and move on.”

What does this mean for the Redskins?  Nothing, currently.  But if the rumors are true that the Redskins are indeed interested in acquiring Jackson, who is unhappy with his current contract in San Diego — then the Redskins won’t be able to use their new #1 receiver until week #4 when Donovan McNabb and his new team travels to Philly for the first time to take on the Eagles on October 3. And a debut that would make for McNabb and his new receiver with the same name “Jackson”… but can the Redskins afford not to have Vince for Dallas, Houston, and St. Louis?

In the short term, no… they need a #1 receiver ready to work with the team from day 1, someone get me T.O.’s number.

In the long term — absolutely!  Just having Jackson under a long term contract and allowing that 3 game suspension to help build suspense for the first Eagle game of 2010 is a story you couldn’t writer much better!
