Shanahan Unpacks The Draft

Here is a series of quotes from Mike Shanahan posted over at the Redskins blog that really boils down the front office’s selections for the 2010 draft.

“I felt we just had a great draft. Obviously, we didn’t have a lot of picks, but when you take a look at it, when you take a look at our first-rounder, in Trent Williams, we felt like we got that offensive tackle that we needed. Very experienced. We feel like he’s got a big upside, and I think he’ll help us for years to come.

“And that second-round pick, I look at our second-round pick is a pretty experienced guy that’s won a lot of games. And that’s Donovan McNabb. Obviously you know what Donovan’s done; we gave up that second-round pick for him and feel very good.

“Next guy, our third-round pick, obviously we didn’t have it in the draft, but Jeremy Jarmon — obviously, he’s comin’ off an ACL, but — we really feel that he could help us at the defensive end position next year.

“Our fourth-rounder was Perry Riley, a linebacker from LSU, inside linebacker that we believe brings us some depth at that position to go with a very strong linebacker corps. Obviously we’ve got some depth.

“Our fifth-round draft choice this year, obviously what we did was we moved down in the fifth round and got Adam Carriker, a former thirteenth pick in the first round that we think can come out and help us at the defensive end position, give us some depth over there.

“Our sixth-round pick: Dennis Morris. A guy that has played fullback, tight end, H-back; a guy that we feel can come in and give us some depth at that fullback, linebacker, tight end position.

“Also, we got three seventh-round picks, one punt returner/kickoff returner in Terrence Austin, and two offensive linemen in [Erik] Cook and [Selvish] Capers. So even though we didn’t have a lot of picks, I think it turned out to be a very great day for the Washington Redskins.”

I think the offensive tackles were the key here — and while Okung and Williams will be compared as the season goes on I think the Redskins staff knew the kind of guy they wanted, they saw it in Willams, and they got him.  As far as I’m concerned, every other pick was icing on the cake. McNabb is going to have more time this season then Campbell did in the past 3.  I think the Redksins have put together a great group of players heading into the training season, there will be heavy competition for starting positions — from running back to left tackle, and that’s just the way you want it.

  1. New QB, new coach, new tackle….this team needed fresh blood. Finally, DC will have a football team that competes.
