Heyer: Asset or Liability?

Mike Shanahan went on the record recently and gave OT Stephon Heyer a vote of confidence. Not only that, Shanahan suggested that Heyer might even be a hidden gem in the NFL, so to speak.

Here is coach’s quote via the Post:

“I though Heyer did some good things last year, and he was hurt. I’m looking forward to seeing how much he grows this offseason. I think Stephon has a lot of ability. I think it’s untapped ability, and if he’s willing to work hard, I think he’s got a chance to be a player in the National Football League. The question is, ‘How hard will he work in this offseason to get to the next level?’ And I’m hoping he does.”

Hmm, in what ways was his ability untapped? He was one of the worst, most under-performing tackles in the league…Even the very same publication agree’s with this sentiment – from last Octobers Post:

With Samuels in the lineup, the Redskins ranked 27th in the NFL in scoring, averaging only 14.6 points per game. With ineffective tackle Stephon Heyer taking over for Samuels on the left side and Mike Williams, who started at guard last week, filling Heyer’s former spot, the Redskins will leave their backs in to block a lot and use many two-tight-end formations on Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs at FedEx Field in an attempt to protect quarterback Jason Campbell.

So not only was Heyer himself a detriment, but his play forced the team to adjust the offensive scheme to fit his deficiencies and EVEN THEN the team failed miserably at home, against the KC Chiefs.

Coach, unless you moonlight as an incredible magician – I look forward to seeing you pull off this seemingly impossible illusion that would transform a guy that afforded his team 8 sacks, 33 pressures on his QB, 10 hits on Campbell, 9 penalties, and 75% of the time was into negative blocking production… how he suddenly becomes a top 10 lineman the next year.

For the team’s sake let’s hope its possible – however unlikely this transformation may be.
