Shanahan Elaborates On State of the 2010 Defense

Mike Shanahan recently elaborated a bit on what his plans are for the 2010 defense.  Many rumors have been swirling around that it’s certainly going to entail a 3-4 scheme change, but Shanahan cautions that the personell evaluations are still ongoing and nothing is certain at this point:

“Until you actually know what your personnel is, I think it’s a little premature. We have… everybody on our staff has run the 3-4 and the 4-3. You may get to the middle of your second minicamp and say, ‘Hey, we might be running a little bit more of a four-man front than a three-man front.’ To say you’re going to do something that early is to be a little premature. So what I’ve said is, we’re going to run the Redskins Defense, which could be a combination of both. Until you look at the personnel, I just hate to say blanketly, ‘This is what we’re going to do.'”

This shouldn’t surprise anyone, this kind of answer atleast. In fact if he said they were definitely going one way or another you would have to be inclined to believe they would do just the opposite.  We’re not going to get any definitive answers on this until this summer… at this point the buzz or rumors swirling are as good as anything to keep us occupied until well after the draft.
