Shanahan Promises He Won’t Disappoint Skins Fans

New Skins coach Mike Shanahan took to the podium for the first time as coach on Wednesday, fresh off signing a new deal worth $7 million per year for five years. “I promise you I won’t disappoint you,” Shanahan said. “I’m going to give you everything I got.”

The new coach talked for about 30 minutes to the media, and said that it is going to take a few weeks to see what direction they want to go into as far as the quarterback position, as well as what coaches, if any, are going to be retained.

“We were looking for a man who was passionate about football,” GM Bruce Allen said, “passionate about the Redskins history, someone who had a good winning record, and someone who could lead our team on and off the field, lead our coaches on and off the field to the greatest heights. Ladies and gentlemen, we got our man.”

Shanahan seems content as well working with Allen, as guy who he spoke raves about in his opening press conference on Wednesday. “First off, we’re a team,” Shanahan said. “One of the reasons I was so excited to work with Bruce is I’ve watched him work at the NFL level, I’ve watched him work as an agent, a GM, and I wanted somebody that I knew would give me his opinion on everything. I’ve been friends with Dan for about 10 years, and we’ve talked about coaches through the years, we’ve talked about GMs, we’ve talked about coordinators. We’ve had a relationship for a long time.

“And when Bruce became available after the end of the last season, I said something to Dan, I said, ‘Dan, a guy like Bruce doesn’t come along very often. Somebody’s going to gobble him up very quickly,’ not knowing that he was going to gobble him up. I’m very happy to be working with Bruce.'”

I know I am in the minority, but I will be disappointed if they let Portis go. He had a down year last year, but he may be the best all around RB the Redskins have ever had. I think he still has a lot left in the tank and now that Shanahan is in town he will turn the engine back up a notch. I’m not condoning him throwing in the towel early on this season, but don’t confuse that with him not having any skills left. They are there.
