Breaking Down the Redskins 2009 Salary Cap

ESPN’s Insider section just did a full-scale blowout about the salary cap for each and every team around the league. Here’s what they had to say on the Redskins:

2009 Salary Cap: $129,424,475
Player with Highest Cap Number: DT Albert Haynesworth ($7,007,280; 5.5% of cap)
Highest Cap Number for a Player No Longer with Club: RT Jon Jansen ($6,266,070; 4.9% of cap, third on club)
Player Who Has to Live Up to Cap Number: DT Albert Haynesworth ($7,007,280; 5.5% of cap)

Anytime you agree to the most lucrative free-agent contract in the history of the sport, there is a significant amount of pressure placed on your shoulders. However, when adding the fact that the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year has to combat the ghosts of Adam Archuleta and Brandon Lloyd (who, by the way, counts for $5,333,334 of 2009 cap space, sixth-highest on the Redskins), then it further compounds the challenge ahead of Haynesworth. It’s a huge gamble for the Redskins, both on the field and in regard to their cap.

But if Haynesworth can wreak havoc like he did for the past two seasons with Tennessee, the gamble will clearly pay off. Hopes are that Haynesworth is not the 2009 version of Sean Gilbert.
