Preseason Predictions

Redskins Camp Football
Oh the vast emptiness and boringness of the NFL off-season. It’s especially excruciating if any of the non-happenings don’t pertain to your favorite team.

For me, it doesn’t matter if the Brett Favre comes back. I’m not concerned with where Plaxico ends up or How many people attended Tom Brady’s wedding. As a Redskins fanatic, I truly can not find the point of interest in any of those stories.

Besides watching old highlights from previous seasons over and over and over again, there is one key to passing the time and maintaining a high level of attention to the NFL: making predictions. Let me clarify, realistic predictions.

The most realistic prediction a Redskin fan can boast this off-season is the high possibility of Brian Orakpo winning Defensive Rookie of the Year. The argument is as follows.

Washington’s interior defensive line is now anchored by 6’6 320 pound Albert Haynesworth. His disruptiveness up the middle will be putting Orakpo in one-on-one situations numerous times throughout a game.

If he performs up to the expectations that come with being drafted in the first round, he should be running past linemen all day long (hopefully gaining notoriety for numerous sacks and tackles for losses).

DeAngelo Hall and an improving Carlos Rogers jamming receivers off the line only to be assisted over the top by Laron Landry and Chris Horton (assuming he wins the starting Strong Safety position) spells coverage sacks. If all goes smoothly, the pieces are in place for Brian Orakpo to do more than contend for the prize.

Now this wasn’t my only prediction. It may have been my only realistic prediction but not my only one none the less. I have a $20 bet marinating in Las Vegas saying the ‘Skins will be playing in the next Super Bowl. No one on planet Earth can change my view on Clinton Portis taking the rushing record this year and league MVP can be given to one man, Shaun Suisham Jason Campbell.
